Chichicastenango market runs on Thursday and Sunday, according to the INGUAT directory of municipal fiestas and market days. It is not on the lakeshore, but it is one of the most common cultural day trips from Lake Atitlán, especially from Panajachel, Sololá, and San Pedro La Laguna.
The market fills the streets around the church of Santo Tomás with textiles, masks, candles, flowers, household goods, produce, and food stalls. The church itself is an active sacred space where Maya ceremonial practice and Catholic parish life meet. Visitors should not photograph ceremonies on the church steps or inside the church without clear permission.
Thursday or Sunday
Both days are official market days. Sunday usually feels busier because it combines market trade with church activity and domestic weekend travel. Thursday can be easier for visitors who want more space to walk and negotiate.
From Lake Atitlán
Shared shuttles and private drivers usually leave early in the morning from Panajachel and other lake towns. Travel times depend on road conditions, weather, and market traffic. Shuttle prices and pickup points vary by operator and season, so confirm locally the day before.
