The patron saint: San Lucas Evangelista
San Lucas Evangelista (Saint Luke the Evangelist) is the author of the third Gospel and the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament. A physician and traveling companion of the Apostle Paul, Luke is the patron saint of doctors, surgeons, painters, and butchers. His feast day, October 18, is fixed on the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar. In iconography, Saint Luke is associated with the winged ox, his traditional symbol among the four Evangelists.
San Lucas Tolimán, situated on the southern shore of Lake Atitlán between Santiago Atitlán and San Antonio Palopó, is a predominantly Tz'utujil Maya community with a significant Catholic identity that has been shaped in part by the historic presence of the Obra Social del Hermano Pedro, a social services organization connected to the diocese. The town is the launching point for climbers ascending Volcán Atitlán and Volcán Tolimán.
What the celebration looks like
Opening days. The fiesta patronal typically begins three to four days before October 18. The cofradía prepares the church and the image of San Lucas Evangelista. The sound of morteros signals the approaching feast across the surrounding hillsides.
Mass on October 18. The Solemn Mass in the parish church of San Lucas is the liturgical center of the feast day. The church is decorated with flowers and candles; the image of San Lucas Evangelista, depicted holding a pen or brush as the patron of artists and writers, is honored at the altar.
Procession. The image of San Lucas is carried through the main streets of town in procession, accompanied by cofradía members, parish groups, families, and the brass band. The route passes through the central plaza and the main commercial streets. Morteros sound throughout the procession.
Coffee harvest context. October 18 falls during or near the beginning of the coffee harvest season in the highlands around the lake. For an agricultural community like San Lucas Tolimán, the fiesta patronal occurs at the start of one of the most economically significant periods of the year, giving the celebration an additional layer of communal gratitude and anticipation.
Feria. The feria grounds in the central plaza host food vendors, marimba groups, carnival activity, and artisan stalls. The feria extends several days past the feast day, with the most intense activity on October 18 itself.
Castillo and fireworks. The night of the feast day is marked by the castillo in the plaza, a multi-stage firework tower visible across the lake.
For visitors
San Lucas Tolimán is accessible by public lancha from Panajachel (approximately 40 to 50 minutes, with fewer daily routes than the busier northwest shore). It is also reachable by road from Santiago Atitlán or via the eastern shore road from Panajachel.
October at the lake is deep in the rainy season, but by mid-October the rains typically begin to ease. Morning fog over the volcano slopes and clear afternoons are common. The volcanic backdrop of Tolimán and Atitlán gives the town a dramatic setting for the fiesta's outdoor events.
The social mission character of San Lucas Tolimán's Catholic community has historically made the parish particularly active in community services and outreach. Visitors who engage with the community beyond the fiesta events may find opportunities to learn about this dimension of the town's Catholic identity.
Modesty in dress is expected for all church and procession events. The feast of San Lucas Evangelista is a major community occasion; respectful attendance is welcomed.
