We had a fantastic stay at the Iguana! They have family dinners every night (you can join even if you’re not staying here). Cool hammocking spots in the shade. Our private room was beautiful. Open mic night was a blast! One of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed in.

Overall, Iguana Hostel is a beautiful place and we did enjoy many parts of our stay. The space itself is lovely, the atmosphere has potential, and the location is great. However, we found the experience a bit uncomfortable at times. There was a very noticeable dominance of “volunteers” who seemed to take over much of the common areas. It often felt like there was a tight-knit clique among them, and the passive-aggressive comments between volunteers (especially around the bar) created an awkward vibe for guests. The friendliness sometimes came off as “fake nice,” and it occasionally felt like guests were more of an inconvenience to the volunteer group than the priority. I’d genuinely encourage the owners to consider hiring more local staff instead of relying so heavily on volunteers -- it seems to be a recurring concern mentioned in other reviews as well. Another downside was how money-focused some things felt. For a higher-end hostel, it was surprising to be required to pay on-site and then charged an additional 8% fee at checkout for card payments which wasnt informed on booking (couldve just paid prior on website).... Given how high ATM fees are in the area, it came across as a bit sly. In summary, the hostel itself is great and the stay was good overall, but the atmosphere created by the volunteer culture and some of the payment policies made us feel less comfortable than expected. This place could be fantastic with a few adjustments.

This has to be one of the loveliest, homeliest, bestest, and most wonderful hostels in the world. La Iguana feels like a home away from home the second you walk in. The food, the music, the views and the people all make it so so special. Chloe, Bryan, Anna, Silvia, Sammy, Jacob, Danny, Lachlan, Vivi, Nikki, Femke, Mara, Bonnie, Lina, Ian, Dave, Deedle, Chapo and Chula all made my stay so special (and all deserve a drink)

I only stayed at this hostel for one night but returned many times for their family dinners! It’s a very cosy and homely hostel - it’s owned by an American - British couple who started the hostel decades ago who have given the place lots of character and soul. I was staying in an 8 bed dorm in a cabin and it was wonderful - very spacious, including it’s own outside decking area. It’s very rustic so maybe if you’re looking for modern hostel, this wouldn’t be the place. Also, there aren’t really hot showers unless you are okay with a dribble of hot water. However, that shouldn’t take away from the charm of the place. Every night at 7pm, they offer family dinners which are beautifully cooked by local women. I think their family dinners offer much more local meals than Free Cervesa imo. It’s a very social activity where everyone from the hostel comes together to eat each night. Oh and there is also usually some after dinner entertainment like open mic night. It is a very hippy hostel so sometimes I didn’t feel like I was free spirited enough to stay there but I think it’s a really calm and homely place to stay at when you’re at the lake!

The hostel is located in Santa Cruz. There is a very steep hill to go up the village and as far as I understood, besides few restaurants, there isn't much to see. The hostel itself has very boutique feel to it: cool windows, lots of flowers and plants and a nice view of the volcanoes. I liked the bar area with a decent choice of drinks! The staff is friendly and helpful and create of a feel of community! There is dart board, pool table and some hammocks.
