No'j is the nawal of wisdom, reason, and the mind's capacity to join ideas in service of community and the Creator in the Maya Tzolk'in calendar. Its full meaning cluster includes wisdom, criterion, reason, thought, agreement with the Creator, joining ideas, advice, science, and good ideas for social or political endeavors. What does No'j (Kaban) mean in Maya tradition?
No'j is the seventeenth day sign in the traditional Cholq'ij. Kaban is the Yucatec/Classic-era equivalent name and points to the same root concept: the movement of the earth, the trembling or vibration that carries information. In K'iche' tradition, No'j is the day of deep intellectual activity aligned with the sacred: not dry academic reasoning, but wisdom that arises from genuinely listening to the community, the ancestors, and the Creator's pattern in events.
Komon Tohil associates No'j with science, political counsel, and the kind of social intelligence that can move groups toward agreement. The "criterion" in its meaning field refers to the discerning capacity: the ability to distinguish between ideas that serve the collective and those that merely serve the individual. Daykeepers use No'j days for petitions around study, important decisions requiring broad counsel, and matters of political or social strategy.
How does No'j relate to other nawales and when does it occur?
No'j follows Tz'ikin (the bird, elevated commerce, the messenger between worlds) and precedes Tijax (the obsidian blade, protective cutting). That sequence is instructive: the wide-horizon view of the bird feeds the mind's capacity for synthesis in No'j, and then the refined judgment of No'j informs what the blade of Tijax should cleanly cut.
